Kids get a taste for cooking at Kingston Primary School

A primary school in Kingston has been given help by national building contractor United Living to install a new kitchen for the children to cook in.

The school had no classroom cooking facilities and the teacher was delivering the sessions on hot plates. The school PTA had fundraised for a long time to get enough money to buy the equipment, units and work surfaces.

They were unable to reach their desired target, or to summon enough external support to install the kitchen and equipment. United Living stepped in and Attila Matyi (UL) site managed the programme with sub-contractors, James Shanahan (Emcon) completing the electrical works & Claudiu Avram (1M Construction) completing the installation, tiling and decoration of the kitchen.

Jenny Gray, Community Development Officer for United Living said: “It was a real pleasure to attend a recent ceremony which celebrated the completion of the new kitchen. You can see the difference that this kitchen has already made to the school and will continue to make over the years. It will enable the teachers to deliver a much more enriched curriculum in a fully functioning kitchen which can only enhance the learning experience for children.”

United Living Contract Manager Darren Brown said: ‘Projects like these leave a lasting legacy and you can see this is going to make a huge difference to the school and for the children as it will give them some great hands on experience.’

The school are thrilled with their new kitchen and Miss White, headteacher said: “We are so delighted to have our new kitchen for the children. It had been a dream of ours, but we did not think that we were going to be able to make it a reality for many years. Now it will transform the experiences we are able to give the children, offering great fun and invaluable life skills. Thank you!’
