A couple from Barking have seen the home that they have lived in for 21 years, become the 1000th to be refurbished by leading social housing contractor United House – now part of the United Living Group.

Ken and Anne Rayner of Jackson Road, Barking, have had a new kitchen and bathroom installed by United House, which has been carrying out the £10m maintenance programme for the past nine months, on behalf of London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

Anne, aged 80 and her husband, 83 year-old Ken, welcomed the Leader of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Council, Cllr Darren Rodwell, the Deputy Leader and Cabinet Minister for Housing Cllr Saima Ashraf as well as members of the United House team into their newly refurbished home to see the changes that have been made.

The couple were presented with a gift and a £1,000 cheque to donate to a charity of their choice from United House. They have chosen to give the money to Saint Francis Hospice, which recently helped care for their daughter-in-law Jacqueline’s mother.

This is the second year of the four year framework contract with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham for the refurbishment of thousands of kitchens, bathrooms, heating and re-wiring being delivered in line with the Government’s Decent Homes guidelines for the refurbishment of social housing.

Anne said: “The new kitchen and bathroom are lovely. We got to choose the style we wanted and they have done a lovely job. United House were so helpful and never left us without water or heating throughout the time they were working on it. It’s wonderful – like have a brand new home.

“We are also so pleased to be able to donate the money to a local charity that is really close to our hearts.”

Daren Moseley, Divisional Director at United House said: “Reaching this milestone of the programme is a huge achievement and one which we are proud to have met. Our long-standing relationship with the LBBD has allowed us to make a real difference in the area, and we are continually committed to improving the lives of residents.
